On Thursday 23 October Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens will be handing over the keys to young people from Year Six at Barugh Green Primary School.

Between 11am and 2pm, the young people will undertake a variety of roles, including Front of House welcome team and Learning Assistants who will show you how to make Halloween decorations and delight you with original stories based on Cannon Hall’s ceramic collection.

Fusion and Barnsley Museums are passionate about including children and young people and providing opportunities to find out more about some of the brilliant creative careers across the borough. This event is part of the national Kids in Museums Takeover event, when young people take over the museums, galleries, historic homes, archives and heritage sites across the UK.

This supports our Great Childhoods Ambition programme which is helping children and young people in Barnsley to benefit from the opportunities that great childhoods can bring

Supported by Arts Council England, Kids in Museums has held an annual takeover since 2014. The charity wants to empower young people and help them learn creative skills, as well as support museums to engage younger audiences.

Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “It’s amazing to see the Takeover Day returning to Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens for another year.

“I’m excited for the children to have the opportunity to take over the running of such a popular site, which I’m sure they will really enjoy. I encourage them to invite their friends and family to come and see them as they become members of the Barnsley Museums team for the day.

“It is yet another example of us delivering on our Great Childhoods Ambition commitment by providing a range of experiences and learning opportunities the can help to give children and young people the best start in life.”

A Year Six Student, from Barugh Green Primary School, said: “I’m really looking forward to helping visitors enjoy their day at Cannon Hall. I will be helping the gardening team and also greeting visitors as they arrive. I can’t wait!”
